1. 10. Natural Cause of Death Thomas Mogensen (DRAX) / Denmark 500
Duration: 2:28 SID: (6581) This tune is dedicated to my lovely dog, Rudi, that I lost on my birthday not long ago. May he rest in peace. I know that this tune is pretty Draxish and that there isn't that much original to it but I hope you will like it anyways.

Duration: 3:16 SID: (8580 Only!) This tune is a compo-suicide and I know it, but I wanted to see if I'm able to include some really strange jazzy progressions in a sidtune - (for example, the canto goes like this: Am7 / C#m9, Esus / F#m11 / Amaj6, Emaj7+ D#m11 / F#m11, Dmaj7+ / Cmaj11 / Cmaj11) - and how it would sound, so... Enough.

27. 27. Mididrums Jaymz Julian (A Life in Hell) / Australia 286
Duration: 3:00 SID: (6581) This is the second attempt I made to do this song on the c64, and was in fact the song that TFX table variables were created for. I originally tried to do this in sid duzz it in early 1999, but the number of arpeggio commands required for the places where there is two leads in one channel, and the blips in the drum/bass channel, overwelmed that editor. So I tried in JCH v20g4, where I had managed to succed with Sunset Spirals, due to the ability it has to change the wavetable from within a song, but this too was not to be, due to the limitations of the editor. So, I started writing a new editor, which was specifically designed to handle this situation, by splitting each channel into six virtual channels, and using special rules to modulate them together. But this took up a lot of ram and raster time, indeed it too so much ram in the editor that I could only store five patterns at a time, so this was not to be either. So Ray introduced me to TFX, and I asked him about changing the wave table from within the song, but he wouldn't have this, because it would confuse people, but he suggested a viable alternative, which is to support variables in the wave table, and promised to add this feature asap. That was January 2001, but he was too busy to implement them for the next two and a half years. So I started bugging him to just give me the source and the bits to build it, and in November 2003, he did. So, I put my money where my mouth was, and added that feature (and a bunch of others which I had been wanting for a long time), and I was _finally_ able to do a version of this that I happy with. To anyone else but me, this is just another mediocre game tune, but for me it was an achievement. (JJ)

28. 22. Riffing On The Edge Andrew Lemon (ne7/Creators/Napalm/Rebels) / England/UK 267

29. 30 COMPOSEED $c0de Rafal Szyja (Raf/Samar/Vulture) / Poland 252
Duration: 3:00 SID: (8580) If it won't blow your head ... you're tough guy.

30. 28. ChipSlip Marcus Jansson (CMP) / Sweden 229
Duration: 2.30 SID: (6581) Thanks for organizing this!

31. 5. Into The Sunset Oliver VieBrooks (Six of Dloc) / USA 194
Duration: 2:15 SID: (8580) Inspired by watching too many old western movies, supposed to be the endtheme of a western where the cowboy rides off into the sunset. I wanted it to be slow, simple, and catchy.

32. 23. Distoken Disinterpretor Langel Janson L. Bookbinder Esq. IX / USA 188

1. 10. Natural Cause of Death Thomas Mogensen (DRAX) / Denmark 500

Comments

Again quite decadent tune, but this has lots of soul & warmth in it. Sounds quite a bit Jeroen Tel-like.
Cadaver / Lasse Öörni
My favourite tune. Soundwise good, and I liked the sneaky use of ringmod. Could well have been longer and with more melodic breaks!
Dane
yeah, yeah, i know, it's good. it's good. it's just I don't like it THAT much. the supremacy bit made me smile, though.
trompkins / maciej stankiewicz
Absolutly remix !!! ups ...
PCH / Unreal
Just brillant! Oldskoolish but kewl! Rock me baby :))
Stefan Konarkowski
Hrm, creamd, why can't I give this 9.1? It is my favourite song in the entire competition, but only by .1 :). It has that very JT style to it, you know.
A Life in Hell
Wow, cool tune! Nice lead sound...
G-Fellow/Civitas
wonderfull. this one perfectly shows the autors experience he gained during all those years. clean sounds, neat melody, i like that.
dalezy
Standard C64-tune, but enjoyable.
Pingo
my number one, spooky atmosphere, catchy melody and great sound, reminds me of some JT stuff here and there.
Spinball
This tune is trying to hide in a Jeroen-suit with the same success as a horse trying to hide in a cowsuit. Wonderful nevertheless.
Twoflower / Mikael Backlund
(1st place for me, nigga you did a great job! excellent composition, neatly arranged, instantly memorable - *bows down*)
Dat Nigga Randall
Jazz.
cmp
Well arranged, melodic changes (nice chorus, bridges..) catchy lead..
Gerard aka GH
what should i say? i showed this tune to my grandma and she recognized the author without her earing aid. this is no name or friendshipvoting (are we friends, thomas? :-). it´s typicall drax stuff with a great arrangement, theme and especially a catchyness that only very few composers are capable of. i have the melodies in my ear(wig) for some days now. therefore i give it a 9 as 8,5 is not allowed. well done...
Fanta
I didn't die, listening to this song... har har.. :/
MTR1975
emotional piece with nice arrangement, reminds me of Jeroen Tel
WoLaNd (Levente Buttás)
www.Solo&Leads.com
GRG
Very nice sound.
Ice00/stefano Tognon
theatral theme, Love-Death in Venice, MON-like stakkatos, highlight is missing
Turtle
This is maximum DRAX power in every note! Fanta nailed it very well ;-). (CreaMD)
2. 31. Natural Cause of Life Alexander Rotzsch (Fanta/Oxyron/Plush) / Germany 492

Comments

Very positive sounding tune with lots of good & different sounds and lot of attention paid to small details happening in the background.. Loops also very nicely.
Cadaver / Lasse Öörni
A wicked intro. No real lead though, just playing with the harmonies throughout.
Dane
the melodic line is actually pretty generic. with stress on 'pretty'. i simply like it and there's not much you can do about this. and it sounds nice.
trompkins / maciej stankiewicz
So Drax-ish...
Luca
How could my two favourite songs in this competition have almost identical names? Surely a conspiricy. This one, in contrast to the other, though, sounds just so cinematic, the one orcan does so well (is this him?), making this also completly brilliant in such a different way to cause of death.
A Life in Hell
Wow, cooler song.
G-Fellow/Civitas
it starts out very jovial, gets dramatic and finally becomes one of these tunes that i could listen to for hours.
dalezy
Perfect sounds and a nice melody. Now this is at least GOOD, which mean I would download and actually listen to it again. 7 is the highest score I give today. This one is the only tune that deserved it.
Pingo
very catchy with great instruments, just the (end)part at 2:40 gets a bit boring.
Spinball
Beautiful introsequence, and the tune itself reminds me of Flotsam/Collisions experiments in trance on the C-64 from the early nineties. Nice nevertheless.
Twoflower / Mikael Backlund
(15th place for me, Jochen Hippel's impersonation on a C64 strikes again, but with less impact than a year ago)
Dat Nigga Randall
Party on dude. This make me shake my lurviga legs in joy. Very smooth. Very good.
cmp
well, selfvoting sucks but i had to. otherwise this tune would be counted with a 5. actually i didn´t want to compete this year but when i saw some good tunes i thought it would be good to also join in. so it´s made in a little hurry. hope someone likes it anyway...
Fanta
Like the phenomenon of life itself... indescribably beautiful... :D
MTR1975
nice sounds, Armakuni would like it ;)
WoLaNd (Levente Buttás)
Impressive sound. Another best tune
Ice00/stefano Tognon
tune is well built but could be more alternating
Turtle
...and how could anyone call this DRAXISH ;-) (CreaMD)
3. 24. Crush Stellan Andersson (Dane/Booze Design) / Sweden 467

Comments

... great work!
LordNikon
Relaxing, warm and creative sounding. This compo has lots of quality entries...
Cadaver / Lasse Öörni
Made by Dane? :)
MattSid
not enough melodic content to attract my attention. at least the sound is above average.
trompkins / maciej stankiewicz
wow!
Kenho
Proof that having anonymous entries is sometimes just not worth it... :). I do like it, tho, a lot. TOday's fun fact: did you know that this messes up the display on psid64? :)
A Life in Hell
cant listen online :( Random vote.
G-Fellow/Civitas
nice sounds and good flow, yet not among my top3 either.
dalezy
SID Error. Based on the rest of the crap here, I guess that is a good thing...
Pingo
Very nice tune, indeed! Guess who composed it. :)
Cybernator
great harmonic song with very well done instruments. just misses some drive to get 9 points from me.
Spinball
This tune sounds like a missing tune from "Cycle". Wonder why? :-) This benefits much from listening a lot to.
Twoflower / Mikael Backlund
(16th place, cool ending, awesome sounds but the rest screams I AM A POP SONG, PUT ME ON A PLAYLIST - well I did, but it was a playlist B)
Dat Nigga Randall
Dont like the sounds, just another copy.
cmp
If this tune does not win, it is at least going to be second ...
finchy
nice stuff musically and technically wise as always from dane. i like the mood, is it written for a girl? ;) but somehow i get bored of the everlasting same style and lead melody sound. so only 7 from me. sorry stellan.
Fanta
Sublime. Sophisticated. Suave. Super Swap Sweden.. (?) Very very very nice composition. Everything about it is great. There is even a man/woman playing the drums with brushes in a large pipe in there FFS!!!! :D
MTR1975
what's this, last ninja remix v1.5? later gets better
WoLaNd (Levente Buttás)
couldn't play it. using a macintosh and SIDplay2.5, Based on the 1.36.34 version of the SIDPLAY emulation engine source and reSID 0.8.
dualaud
Nice melody.
GRG
Dane like style. However this is the best
Ice00/stefano Tognon
Sounds like Dane, well done instruments and arrangements, good fill-in's, although instruments are not good enough for a multispeed one, coolness is missing a bit, technically well done
Turtle
Seems like I'll have to put play-instructions next to problematic tunes. However, Dane if you had packed it... (CreaMD)
4. 12. Level Kamil Wolnikowski (Jammer/EXON/MSL/Samar) / Poland 457

Comments

hey... ya... funky ;)
LordNikon
This shows clear ownage of the SID and lots of creativity. But there doesn't seem to be a clear overall goal to the rambling & clever melodies...
Cadaver / Lasse Öörni
I like the intro! Would have done something different with the lead though.
Dane
very lively, excellent lead and rhythm sections. i never thought i'd like something that... jamiroquai-ish? that much.
trompkins / maciej stankiewicz
Poppy, heh. Like,yea.
A Life in Hell
beautifull lead.
exbee
Not bad.
G-Fellow/Civitas
nice sounds here too. good flow within the whole tune, yet it didn't make it to my favorites.
dalezy
Now, THIS is at least good sounds mixed with some imagination. Too bad it's "jazzy".
Pingo
very relaxing, the baseline keeps it somehow on the ground while the lead is taking of, hope someone understands what i try to say :)
Spinball
Very uptempo, drifting melody with some nice chords.
Twoflower / Mikael Backlund
(13th place, hasn't got a proper groove nor a catchy melody, but harmonically is just great and the sounds blow up the speakers)
Dat Nigga Randall
Naa... Could never be nice. I mean NEVER!!! No orginality. No good sounds. No data at all.
cmp
Classic SID funk! Good instruments!
RaveGuru of Instinct
Great! Nice funky-flow...
MTR1975
I love Drax. or at least his style :) but the bass in the break-down sucks - it's for faster tempo
WoLaNd (Levente Buttás)
Not the style I like, but very good tune
Ice00/stefano Tognon
funky, good instruments, well done and variable lead
Turtle
I would appreciate more catchy melodies and less jamming (pun was intened ;-). But still a perfect tune. (CreaMD)
5. 14. Vinyl Headz Michal Hoffmann (Dat Nigga Randall / Ghettomuzik) / Poland 456

Comments

This tune does some amazing stuff with the SID. The drums sound almost like digis and there seems to be a galwaynoise like sound...
Cadaver / Lasse Öörni
It's always cool to filter several voices. Fun sound effects. Too bad the lead isn't that memorable
Dane
at first - a mildly interesting progression and plethora of fx; some neat fragments drowned in an aimlessly spilling half-warm soup. but after i ate a big mac it started to sound somewhat better. strange, huh? oh, and neat ending. i always fall for these.
trompkins / maciej stankiewicz
Okay, technically _very_ impressive. Lets get that straight out. THankfully, also musically there, which many technically impressive songs these days seem to lack
A Life in Hell
Very good sounds and good melo.
G-Fellow/Civitas
technically seen it's a great tune, i simply like the soundsetup. yet the melody is pretty hard to listen to (which is quite common whenever i listen to any other of this composers tunes - what kinda scale is that?).
dalezy
Some nice sounds and ideas, destroyed by bad intro and slowness.
Pingo
great song with a nice funky beat. some very cool instuments...
Spinball
Awesome tune, technically a killer. If I had to pick up the single best tune of the compo I'd definately chose this one.
Sascha Zeidler
One of my faves this compo, which have grown over time. This one feels like the perfect meld of Scortias and Metals later melodies with those chords and sensitive melodies. Didn't expect a tune like this in the compo. Very danish.
Twoflower / Mikael Backlund
Beginning sounds like a radio. Nice, but then comes "normal" copied sounds. Naa, some data but not enough to satisfy. Feels like it is repeating too much, eventhough there's some variation. Skips nice in the end. Nice work, but make it HEAVIER data. and drop the base.
cmp
very cool indeed!
Fanta
9 just for the genius old-skool blip/percussion noise and a sitar (!?) in a break. :) Could listen to this all day, and probably will.
MTR1975
I like the tune's mood, somehow reminds me of SMC
WoLaNd (Levente Buttás)
good sounds+fx
GRG
very interesting the final seconds of this tune
Ice00/stefano Tognon
funky multispeed tune although instruments are not multispeed enough. good use of filters
Turtle
Complicated, sophisticated, intricated, and packed up with original sounds! (CreaMD)
6. 21. Unleash The F. Fury Lasse Öörni (Cadaver/CoverBitOps) / Finland 439

Comments

This tune should have been louder and more sound variations wouldn't have hurt either.. Happy chorus is also a bit detached from the rest. But hey, it has a Yngwie/Jens/Yngwie/Jens duel :)
Cadaver / Lasse Öörni
How cool! Times like this you want extra voices to add! Maybe that's why I'm not giving it a higher score - the style makes you so aware of the limits.
Dane
all in all, a good song, but not the one i'd listen to very frequently. even though it features those great solos.
trompkins / maciej stankiewicz
Metal on the C64 ??? wow ....
PCH / Unreal
Either someone played even more metal warrior 4 than I did, or someone is cadaver :). Either way, this tune has that definite style to it, which is always in fashion! The song sounds great, although perhaps the intro hides what lies behind it a little too well
A Life in Hell
six points
G-Fellow/Civitas
this one has a nice theme, it's something for those that can appreciate some nice riffs, which leads back to guessing that the autor spends some quality time playing guitar next to doing c64-musick.
dalezy
No, please DON'T unleash the fury. It sucks.
Pingo
This one's really cool! 1st place if you ask me. :)
Cybernator
great metal-style song, kickass solo at 2:30. would love to here it played by a real band.
Spinball
Very much seventies or early eighties hard-rock mixed with a little Megaman. Way to go.
Twoflower / Mikael Backlund
(20th place for me, perfectly crafted, but unfortunately I don't find the New Wave of British Heavy Metal style attractive)
Dat Nigga Randall
Fast, speeded, nice, good beat. Game tune. Shoot em up or car race. Feels like going FAST on the autobahn. Music to work out or clean the room very fast to! Love it. Very nice break at 1:50. Although it feels like the tune repeats very much, it is good it is long.
cmp
Isn't that a tune out of MW4? Well, doesn't matter, my absolute favorite!
finchy
Strong vibes.. lotsa changes.. bridges, breaks.. great attempt wannebee sologuitar ;)
Gerard aka GH
Metal is not my thing really, sorry - but this still kept me entertained. It made me smile in several places, and that cant be bad at all :) Brilliant high register riff-o-rama. Aw shucks, metal *is* okay... :P
MTR1975
hard rock or metal on the c64? :) nice try, but not my taste
WoLaNd (Levente Buttás)
A Metal Warrior 5 future tune (some passage remember MW2)?Very good tune.
Ice00/stefano Tognon
Iron Maide or Metal Warrior like. Somehow even SEGA-style ingame theme, standard instruments
Turtle
Thanx for this one Cadaver! And yet, I want more!!! ;-) (CreaMD)
7. 6. Sherona Red Hein Holt (Hein/Focus) / Netherlands 438

Comments

Total show of technical excellency and evokes a decadent feeling... Decadent but just a bit cold.
Cadaver / Lasse Öörni
Very smooth sounds. I would have wanted some sort of strong chorus in this. Now it feels like more like a random jam session. Nothing wrong with that, though.
Dane
reminiscent of martin iveson's bubba'n'stix mods, which i absolutely adore, blended with some hints of lucasarts' adventure games soundtracks... bliss. plus it doesn't sound like a 1x speed tune at all.
trompkins / maciej stankiewicz
really nice
ne7
As cantaloop says, Funky, Funky
A Life in Hell
A little bit crazy...
G-Fellow/Civitas
nice flow during the whole tune, doesn't get boring after 2 hours of listening. nice sounds - we're talking a skilled gt-user here. still, didn't really make it to my top3.
dalezy
Usually I don't like these jazzy tunes, but this one was a least well done.
Pingo
everything fits together very well, still it misses something to get 9 points, don´t know what though.
Spinball
Technically really good. So are the jazzy messed-upped beats, I love this one.
Sascha Zeidler
Beautiful tune, very nice chordusage. Contains more focus on the groove than on the melodies. Like a fusion of Metal and Drax in 1995.
Twoflower / Mikael Backlund
(14th place, this tune shows awesome skills of its composer, but doesn't have anything memorable besides first 15 seconds or so)
Dat Nigga Randall
Jazz. Sounds like a copy.
cmp
Great instruments!!
RaveGuru of Instinct
Great style groovey swing thing.. :)
Gerard aka GH
a very fine piece of art. i only don´t like the mood too much.
Fanta
Is the title of this a wine? Cos it's certainly like a fine wine; rich, full bodied, and intoxicating :D
MTR1975
the old funky Drax tradition, and I like it a lot
WoLaNd (Levente Buttás)
Oh my, awesome shit! :)
GRG
The style is not my best one. However the sound are good implemented in the instruments
Ice00/stefano Tognon
good instruments, funky, melody and red line is missing a bit, well arranged
Turtle
Did I hear "crazy" and "decadent"? ;-) But anyway this one is a *serious* stuff! (CreaMD)
8. 15. Focus On Food Ronny Engmann (Dalezy) / Germany 424

Comments

Another cool and dynamic sounding tune with clever arpeggios.
Cadaver / Lasse Öörni
Sounds like a Drax-fan and I like Drax as well. Advice for next time: Raise the volume of your leadvoice and use echoes and vibrato more!
Dane
some bits remind me of ashley hogg's elephant antics. very pretty, even though it's in fact only 53 seconds long.
trompkins / maciej stankiewicz
The whole drax style going on, which is required in a music competiton lately :).
A Life in Hell
Cool one
G-Fellow/Civitas
Standard Game Over-music.
Pingo
i realy like this one. a bit simple but it works for me.
Spinball
Focus on food, catchy melody and nice chordprogression. This tune is leaning on to a local musical tradition which indicates that it is originating from the areas around Örebro, mid Sweden.
Twoflower / Mikael Backlund
(6th place, VERY enjoyable, the leads are amazingly inspired, it just becomes boring a little bit too early - a little variation wouldn't hurt it)
Dat Nigga Randall
Says nothing to me. Jazz shit. I dont like this kind of mzx. This kind of mzx only sound good with 32 channels and stereo. And I dont like stereo.
cmp
too short like always, ronny. :) also i miss a "message" or the special thing here...
Fanta
Brilliant rythymic arp in this song. Love the melodies too.
MTR1975
typical intro disco zak, but it's still cool
WoLaNd (Levente Buttás)
I like the background voices, very good, while the main is sometime a bit boring for me
Ice00/stefano Tognon
reyn ouwehand's eliminator like, good style although without absolute highlights
Turtle
This one has a little bit JT bassline IMO. It would fit well into some logic game with time limit ;-). (CreaMD)
9. 11. Flight of Serpent Dragon Rafal Kazimierski (Asterion) / Poland 423

Comments

This song would have scored 9 from me if it had more dynamics and not so muffled drumsound :) Cool medieval melodies and Follin-atmosphere...
Cadaver / Lasse Öörni
Interesting chords and rhythm, but the lead is a bit too weird for me.
Dane
same old, same old. same good. i'd like some plodding doom metal next time, though. or anything, just so it would be different.
trompkins / maciej stankiewicz
Fantasia :) Ireland style :))
PCH / Unreal
Uhm...smells like Teen...nitus! :D
Luca
You know, twelve months ago, I would have give this a nine, and I'm sure that many will this competition. This is horrible to say, since I couldn't write a song like this ever, but part of me just wants to scream "this was great when it was Celebrating Samhain, or any one of the other Tinnitus songs from the past 12 months". BUt maybe I'm being pig headed. Hey, 8 is still good!
A Life in Hell
Dont like it soooo much...
G-Fellow/Civitas
a cool follin-esque tune.
dalezy
Irish folk-music-inspired tale that would fit well in a bad fantasy game.
Pingo
something very different. creats its own special atmosphere, somehow experimental but i can still follow the song :)
Spinball
Very nice, very engaging and very celtish. Not completely unlike last years entry in style but doesn't reach out to the level wonderful, like that one did. The follinish turn at 2:00 gives me an unnatural urge to play Solstice on the NES.
Twoflower / Mikael Backlund
(8th place, original, medieval/follinish in the extreme, the bridge brought tears of joy to my eyes)
Dat Nigga Randall
Jazz. A little RPG game tune. Not very nice to listen to. Some data sounds in the background. But they drown in the Jazz. Uack! Too repetative. Is this Hein? He does better tunes than this.
cmp
Celtic medieval meets C64. Fresh and brilliantly done! //RaveGuru of Instinct
RaveGuru of Instinct
Heroic, a journey, goes somewhere..love the flute that plays along..
Gerard aka GH
A true "flight of fantasy". Quality shee-at.
MTR1975
at least some unique composition, even if in Tim Follin's own style. sounds like a game track. gets repetitive in the midle, but the break-down saves a lot
WoLaNd (Levente Buttás)
So Follin.
GRG
As usual very good instrument implementation by this author
Ice00/stefano Tognon
TV-title theme, helicopter mission, somehow military, just like A-Team, coolnes is missing a bit
Turtle
That muffled drumsound is only bad thing about this tune. It has great atmosphere, I played this one a lot. (CreaMD)
10. 3. Mutator Mark Thomas Ross (MTR1975) / Scotland/UK 417

Comments

Haha, begins with epic medieval guitar :) The low noise frequencies of the drums bother me extremely, but the creativity makes up for it. Lots of diverse influences, there is some Follin feeling but it also reminds of LN3 music...
Cadaver / Lasse Öörni
Togheter with "Lost Again" is one of the best tune in the Compo, wonderful!
MattSid
What puts me off is the instruments. Some pulse and vibrato would have made it more pleasant. It also takes quite a while before something happens.
Dane
except for the clumsy handling of the progression somewhere in the middle, the song, sprinkled with bits of gray and dunn, develops nicely without risk of lulling the listener to sleep. i think that's quite an achievement, bearing in mind its length.
trompkins / maciej stankiewicz
bloody epic!, my fave of the whole collection.
ne7
Melodic songs like this, that's what the sid is all about, for me, at least that's what I thought until I hit about, uhm, 1:00 or so. Now, personally, at that point I would have done the bass line quite differently to the author, but the song redeemed itself by the 1:30 mark, by bringing in an exquisite lead . The song gets an 8 anyhow, because I absoutely can't fault the author's musicianship, just one technical decision that is probably a product of my sid having a different sid to theirs anyhow :).
A Life in Hell
I swear, that this tune is from Astarion! I like it very much...
G-Fellow/Civitas
nice sounds, really. good windinstruments are rare in c64musick these days.
dalezy
Enjoyable. Some very good parts, but overlong.
Pingo
great composition, but some parts disturb the overall great impression.some instruments don´t fit to well.
Spinball
Long, epic and somewhat of epic, Geoff Follinesque proportions.
Twoflower / Mikael Backlund
(4th place, I'm back to school and listening to Hubbard and Dunn for hours; kudos to the composer for bringing my ass there)
Dat Nigga Randall
Quite good, but too much Jazz to be really good. Nice energy in this tune. LOOOONG, repetitive. Copied base line. No use. Base and drums would benefit from not being on the same channel, but then it would be only one channel left for the "waveing" sound (that gives me a headace after a while anyway) and the melody (that is not very good but atleast has some variations in it.) The SECOND tune, at 5.00 is the nicest in this one. Good data with the ring modulation, but it could have benefitted from being more variated and more sounds and a cooler beat, with more fucked up drum sounds. More like Stu, but that would be asking for Stu and not this author. Is it Mermaid mĺntro? Good tune for being her.
cmp
Would have done other chords at.. 2:59 3:12 or is it my undefine ear ;)
Gerard aka GH
0. Thats the other digit I couldnt fit into the vote space for my own musix... :/
MTR1975
wow, a c64 ballad, nice guitar emulation and flute, later nice MON-style bassline
WoLaNd (Levente Buttás)
Excellent! Lot's of fat changes.
GRG
Fantastic instruments in all the peace. Beautiful variety of sounds.
Ice00/stefano Tognon
middle-evesque, Zelda-like, simple but matching instruments
Turtle
LOVELY tune! A bit raw sounds, but I like tunes with a lot of variation and this one is really well worked out. (CreaMD)
11. 17. The Battle Of [illegible] Maciej Stankiewicz (Trompkins/Tinnitus) / Poland 395

Comments

Haha! Total Cinemaware music. High points for bravery and epicness, though the sounds are not quite utilizing the full SID potential...
Cadaver / Lasse Öörni
Another son of Tim Follin :D
MattSid
Interesting - but nothing that sticks.
Dane
i give my zak a 5. as in 'a bit above average' or 'hmm, interesting, but where's the filter, janet?'. i'm being modest, you see.
trompkins / maciej stankiewicz
Barbarian! Oh, how I love the msuic from barbarian, and this. It's a hard genre to do well on the commodore, no question, but the author has pulled it off with style.
A Life in Hell
Yo, some kind of middle age music
G-Fellow/Civitas
paul norman would have been proud. the perfect soundtrack to dig holes in the forest.
dalezy
Defender of the Crown on acid. Bad, bad, bad, bad and bad.
Pingo
this one was very hard to judge for me. it has some very cool parts but overall it is missing something. i would love to here it in a spooky demo part.
Spinball
Outstanding composition.
Sascha Zeidler
Can you get more oldskool than this?! Who's producing the movie?
Zapac/Anders Carlsson
Richard Joseph meets Paul Norman for the composition of the tunes for the the C-64 conversion of "Wizardy VII". If I made an adventure game, i'd beg this composer on my bare knees for a tune. One of the big surprises in the compo.
Twoflower / Mikael Backlund
(3rd place, Jesus Christ almighty, now this is a crazy one; never mind the simple sounds, I wouldn't be able to compose something like this, ever)
Dat Nigga Randall
This is mzx for a RPG game. I like analog RPG but I dont like electric mzx in RPG. Not even in the digital RPGs. Find a job as musician for a game company. You'll do fine. Good descriptive title of the tune. The tune could go on forever.
cmp
Would be a nice sci-fi game title ...
finchy
Great peice of music! Excellent composition.
MTR1975
the flavour of old game tunes, nice Follin-esque variations
WoLaNd (Levente Buttás)
rpg adventure..
GRG
Sound at 1.00 is fantastic.Very good made
Ice00/stefano Tognon
Paul Norma like interesting style, oldschool but o.k., good break at 1:00
Turtle
Monumental, epic, and full of pathos a the same time ;-). (CreaMD)
12. 32. Are you satisfied ? (prw) Marcin Kubica (Booker/Amorphis/Onslaught) / Poland 394

Comments

Shortness doesn't prevent this tune from being good.
Cadaver / Lasse Öörni
Yes, the kind of bassline I like! Give this guy more time to compose next time so we could have a lead to suit it!
Dane
i don't think i am. proper sound and not much else. what's the point?
trompkins / maciej stankiewicz
I'd love this if it was longer. But it isn't, so I only like it....
A Life in Hell
Yes iam satisfied
G-Fellow/Civitas
catchy stuff. it has the vibrants/mon-feeling to it, which i'm totally into. could need a melody to be 100% cool.
dalezy
No, I'm not satisfied at all. These compo-tunes sucks. All but "Natural Cause of Life" was bad. So is this one.
Pingo
nice but short, reminds me of some jch-tunes.
Spinball
I hope this will move beyond beeing a preview. Very much Jeroenish groove over this one. Very much like an improved 2 channel ingametune.
Twoflower / Mikael Backlund
(19th place, could be one of the best, but what I've got here is just a small sample, therefore I'm not satisfied, sorry)
Dat Nigga Randall
Not very good. No other comment.
cmp
not bad. though i think the try to immitate JT failed somehow but maybe this was not intended by booker. :) because of the shortness only 6 from me.
Fanta
Great bass. Reminded me of days gone by, when things were better and bread was only 5p. :)
MTR1975
funk! that's what I want!
WoLaNd (Levente Buttás)
Too short, or maybe it seems to many equal
Ice00/stefano Tognon
good intro and bassline, arps are too simple compared to the bass
Turtle
I did not like the empty rest...
Hoogo/Frank Juerke
Pity it wasn't finished... (CreaMD)
13. 4. Garden of the Black Rose part 4 Krzysztof Malczewski (Phobos/Samar) / Poland 394

Comments

Very polished sounding and technically excellent, but also somewhat restrained. It doesn't inspire you to flip out...
Cadaver / Lasse Öörni
Quite melodic! Some more dynamics with the chords and a different lead instrument in the first part would have spiced this up a lot.
Dane
aaargh... cheese overflow. the sad, romantic, ballad cheese deeply rooted in the progressive post-disco polo traditions, with vocal lines included for convenient humming. in other words, i - highly arbitrarily and unfairly - don't like it.
trompkins / maciej stankiewicz
just a really nice melody/lead line
ne7
I am deeply in love with this song, it's hard to describe why. Because it shouldn't be that impressive, but it manages to create a feeling in a way that not that many songs do, in the same way that "Illumination" did last year, I guess.
A Life in Hell
Slow tune, not bad...
G-Fellow/Civitas
balladesque, nice harmonies. sadly not catchy enough.
dalezy
Pretty old-school. Could work in a game.
Pingo
nice song with atmosphere, but sounds to flat overall.
Spinball
Mellow one, this. The guitar / voice duet parts are nice.
Twoflower / Mikael Backlund
(18th place, is this an example from some lecture at some Music Academy? very nice tune but sounds too standard)
Dat Nigga Randall
A normal tune. Nothing data at all. What's the point? This could be playing on the radio without me taking notice. The drums are so perfect, the background "waving" so pathetic. The melody is smooth and melancollic. Kind of nice when in the right mood. Bouns for Variation.
cmp
lovely...
Fanta
The roses may be black, but they still smell pretty sweet.
MTR1975
nice bass and composition, quite romantic, sounds very much like Mitch & Dane :)
WoLaNd (Levente Buttás)
Very nostalgic. I like it
Ice00/stefano Tognon
tells a story so only the lyrics are missing, current instruments, lead could have been more interesting
Turtle
Melancholy in combination with banal melody (like many of mine ;-) and quite interesting sounds.
Still a good one! (CreaMD)
14. 7. Second Steps Aleksi Eeben (aeb/Carillon) / Finland 387

Comments

Some very wicked vibratos in there... A bit like number 6. it doesn't evoke that much emotions in me but is very proficiently made.
Cadaver / Lasse Öörni
The chords sound out of tune. And sorry, the minimalist approach makes it sound like only 2 voices are used until the lead kicks in.
Dane
nicely sounding, not very gripping.
trompkins / maciej stankiewicz
This song is quite different, and I'm not sure how I feel about that. I do love what is there, but there isn't nearly enough of it, and instead the author tries to make up for this by almost endless repeating of certain sections. A shame, because what's here _is_ really good.
A Life in Hell
Cool funky tune..
G-Fellow/Civitas
very cool, probably the most danceable tune from this compo.
dalezy
Boring as hell. Overlong even with only 2 minutes of playtime.
Pingo
got some nice parts here and there, but not realy my taste.
Spinball
Nice tune, another one with the focus on groove over melody.
Twoflower / Mikael Backlund
(12th place, develops nicely, very well made soundwise, could have used more variety throughout - a bridge of some sort perhaps?...)
Dat Nigga Randall
Just repeating, repeating, repeatin. Though the sounds are nice data.
cmp
i really like this one. a tune i could listen to for a while. good rhythmic elements and a perfect fitting melody. it could have gained 8 from me easily with some more variations and/or better sounds.
Fanta
Erm, I ran out of "witty" comments... can I just say: this is really nice.
MTR1975
another funk, the arpeggios help a lot, although too dry at times
WoLaNd (Levente Buttás)
Nice.
GRG
Too much monotony for me, even if there is a little variation sometimes
Ice00/stefano Tognon
cool bassline, modern instruments, Café del Mar feeling or Nightmare on Wax
Turtle
I wonder what would happen if Aleksi's composing went wild...
Perfect tune, but the *drive* is locked in a cage. (CreaMD)
15. 20. Marvel Gerard Hultink (GH/Toondichters) / Netherlands 387

Comments

Opens with sarcastic melody, then becomes something much more diverse. Here the jazzy melodies do have a direction & soul, which is pleasing :)
Cadaver / Lasse Öörni
Why not echoes in the beginning? Also the harmonies get a bit out of tune at times. Someone's been listening to Drax while composing the lead, I think.
Dane
the lead decides to wander off the rehearsed bionic commando path and unintentionally causes terror among unsuspecting listeners. that's ok in my book, i like causing terror too. a 7 for this gentleman.
trompkins / maciej stankiewicz
This, on the other hand, did resonate, in a sort of lightforce meats Bluez' Muz style.
A Life in Hell
Nice one
G-Fellow/Civitas
a tricky one. at first i thought it's 3 people who did that tune. then i thought i'm somewhat sure to know who it is until i got tricked again. see, we're talking versatility in composing experience here, which is good. this tune has the magic ability to run for several hours without getting boring.
dalezy
Name is perfect. It's as bad as a Marvel comic.
Pingo
some boring seconds at the beginning, but then it gets much better.
Spinball
Brave of the composer to add a tune like this for a compo, since it needs some time to grow in your mind. Feels like a suitable titletune for a Spiderman or X-men conversion.
Twoflower / Mikael Backlund
(2nd place, my reaction during the first listening: bueh, doesn't move me; my reaction two weeks later: that's what I call music, marvellous job)
Dat Nigga Randall
WAAAAA! My head! My ears, save me! Spare me! WHAT is this "tune" trying to copy!?
cmp
nice one
finchy
total crap this is
Gerard aka GH
Kinda cool, a bit loud and brash with it tho... :)
MTR1975
classic mid-nineties style, not too bad
WoLaNd (Levente Buttás)
A very well composed tune
Ice00/stefano Tognon
passably instruments, simple and arbitrary lead but well done breaks,
Turtle
A little bit loud lead until 0:45.. I think it had driven away some fans, but the rest is just fine! Yum. (CreaMD)
16. 29. Sunday Weirdness Marc van den Bovenkamp (No-XS/World Wide Expressive) / Netherlands 385

Comments

Cool bassline against the chords, and very polished drumsounds.
Cadaver / Lasse Öörni
Some cool percussion instruments. I'm a bit put off by the lame bass in the beginning though. Start with percussion / chords instead.
Dane
too short! too shooort!! very pleasant nonetheless, i particularily liked the way drums sound. and that tiny bit around 1:30. it's sweet.
trompkins / maciej stankiewicz
This song is just so early 90's game music, it's great, but if only it was longer. It sadly suffers from the "hrm, I really liked this... hey, where'd that song go?!" syndrome
A Life in Hell
not bad.
G-Fellow/Civitas
i'm not really a fan of bass solos when a song starts, good thing that got saved after the drums and chords hit in. good work with the sounds too.
dalezy
Not as lame as the other tunes at least...
Pingo
needs a bit to long till it realy starts. 30 sec. "fad in" is just to long for a 2min song. feels like this tune has more potential.
Spinball
Nice sounding, very soft vibes around the sounds, especially the drums and bass. Reminds me a lot of the music made in Grabowskys editor, "Sosperec" by Cane and DOS of ADSR.
Twoflower / Mikael Backlund
(7th place, unmistakably fresh style of Marc, has a mighty fat bassline which I'd like to steal :>, it reminds me of Herbie...)
Dat Nigga Randall
80's, 80's, 80's. It is fun, but not good. This could have gone good with any shit game, like Garfield or smthng. Tries to be Jazzy. They are all COPYS, going in "the wrong" direction from being good.
cmp
Who ever composed this should have a month of Sundays, har har... :P Melodic genius at work circa 1:30 :D
MTR1975
the 1000th tune of its genre, but nicely done. so it's not that original
WoLaNd (Levente Buttás)
Another one that it is well done
Ice00/stefano Tognon
cool bassline and rhythm, all in all it fits
Turtle
I like it very much, just it's too subtle. You should put more monumentality to this kind of catchy tunes. (CreaMD)
17. 25. Path Of Pain Daniel M. Gartke (Turtle / The Demented) / Germany 375

Comments

Very thin filtered sound, almost to point of irritation. Still this is good...
Cadaver / Lasse Öörni
Too bad. Has a different layout soundwise, but the melody doesn't really settle with me.
Dane
this one sounds slightly better than 'crush'. it starts off better than 'crush', too, but eventually fails to stay consistent and keep me interested until end.
trompkins / maciej stankiewicz
I love this track, but I'm sure that most won't, because sidplay really doesn't do it justice - if you have access to a real c64, you should listen to it on that
A Life in Hell
Nice melo
G-Fellow/Civitas
if it wasn't for the grungy sounds, this one would have gotten more points from me. nice melody.
dalezy
Yes, it IS painful. Painfully BAD.
Pingo
to noisy for my taste, i don´t like the drumsounds.
Spinball
This one got loads of catch, but too much focus on the sounds. Nice echoing and stuff.
Twoflower / Mikael Backlund
(10th place for me, I suppose those junky sounds were intentional; the melody sticks like fuck!)
Dat Nigga Randall
Nice use of the filter. Some really nice base sounds. Could have a better melody and more data-sound and much, much less of "Dane" instrument if it was to be really, really good.
cmp
Too much "noise" in this track for my liking. Which is unfortunate, cos the underlying song is pretty great.
MTR1975
pain to my ears, but it could have been better with careful and more delicate sound design
WoLaNd (Levente Buttás)
This is another one of the best. Very varieties of sounds.
Ice00/stefano Tognon
what should I say? short on time.
Turtle
Ah.. better percussion sounds pleasee! This would rock! (CreaMD)
18. 19. Cosy Brains Pulsating Mark Waldaukat (Heinmukk/Salva Mea) / Germany 375

Comments

Like the title suggests, this is very relaxing music, but still has strong & dynamic feeling to it. It develops sort of slowly, so user patience is needed.
Cadaver / Lasse Öörni
Some nice sounds here. Just feels like an intro / worktune though. The melodic lead I'm waiting for never really arrives.
Dane
with a more discreet rhythm section and that staccato lead replaced with something more fitting it would be much easier to swallow. some bits and pieces evoke an fsol-kinda mood. which is nice.
trompkins / maciej stankiewicz
cute!
ne7
Meh. Just Meh. I know, that's not a real reaction, but it just didn't resonate for me.
A Life in Hell
Melody is missing...
G-Fellow/Civitas
clean sounds, nice flow, musick zum kiffen. the filtered arpeggios that appear every now and then send a shiver down my spine. the whole thing could have been a tad faster tho.
dalezy
I'm getting pretty fed up on boring tunes now...
Pingo
nice beat. sounds a bit empty.
Spinball
what about voting for oneself? i like my tune! =)
mark waldaukat/heinmukk
Nice sounds, focus on the groove. Sort of Metalstyled, I like it.
Twoflower / Mikael Backlund
(5th place for me, a tune I've waited for, analogue instrumental hip hop with excellent, slow, mellow groove; yo, chill out and smoke that blunt!)
Dat Nigga Randall
Sounds like smoookas shit. Dont like the tune. The sounds are good, but the tune is not built up in the way I like them. There could be more data sounds and less base beat that doesnt give me anything anyway. But bonus points for choosing a descriptive title for the tune. Better in the end of the tune where data scratch comes in. Nice
cmp
Nice relaxed tune at a nice relaxed pace. Inspires contemplation, and all that other groovy stuff :) I know I'll be playing this for hours in the future. :)
MTR1975
uninspired, slow, boring. my brain isn't pulsating to this
WoLaNd (Levente Buttás)
nice arpeggio.A bit to many static.
Ice00/stefano Tognon
it happens too less but sounds good. something only happens at 2:00
Turtle
A little bit too melancholic for a compo music, but still a good piece! (CreaMD)
19. 16. Your Average Giallo Sascha Zeidler (Linus) / Germany 354

Comments

This tune sounds confused with its melody, but very interesting & proficiently done.
Cadaver / Lasse Öörni
The monotone bass is a bit boring and I loose track of the lead too soon.
Dane
the beginning is interesting. there are no clear highlights throughout the song, however.
trompkins / maciej stankiewicz
I think the key word in this title is "Average". I mean, there'[s nothing inherently bad about this track, there's just nothing really that good about it, either.
A Life in Hell
Like it!
G-Fellow/Civitas
nice chords. other than that, pretty boring.
dalezy
Name is nice, but it sounds like Led Storm.
Pingo
it`s always fun! keep on truckin` ; )
logan
sounds very interesting for some seconds but gets boring to fast.
Spinball
5/4 beats meet great melody lines and a nice solo. Did I miss anything? :)
Sascha Zeidler
Certainly transmits some feeling or progression. Somewhat tedious to listen 3:14, and would have needed a bridge somewhere, but nice nevertheless.
Twoflower / Mikael Backlund
(11th place, surprised me with its 5/4 timing plus the filtered arpeggios were also a bright idea, well done!)
Dat Nigga Randall
J.a.z..z..z.z.zzzz...
cmp
Interesting time sigs/combinations. Generally quite inventive. Like it a lot.
MTR1975
while listening got bored after a while...
WoLaNd (Levente Buttás)
Very interesting passage at 2.00
Ice00/stefano Tognon
no melody to me, interessting tempo, not my taste, instruments could be better
Turtle
Eww... Weird tempo combined with melody is giving me a headache.
That passage, Stefano is mentioning is good. (CreaMD)
20. 2. Sidcompo IV Martin Nordell (Maktone/Fairlight) / Sweden 339

Comments

Nice and happy sounding, the mainpart somehow reminds of Turrican endtune.. End of this tune is something totally different, but cool also.
Cadaver / Lasse Öörni
Chord progression is so weird. I would have preferred something more standard. If it's not Maktone it's one of his biggest fans.
Dane
your average mid-90's introzak. nothing to brag home about.
trompkins / maciej stankiewicz
very nice oldskool zik...
ne7
This song sounds like something from a ZX-Spectrum or Atari ST, which is actually no problem for me, since I love to hear that sometimes, so I mean that in definantly a good way.
A Life in Hell
Very nice happy tune...
G-Fellow/Civitas
not my favorite here. i liked the arpeggios after the noise has been scaled up and down in the beginning, the melody was partly hard to listen to.
dalezy
A bit boring.
Pingo
reminds me of (amiga) chip-tunes, nice melody but a bit to simplistic sounds for my taste.
Spinball
Not much to comment.
Twoflower / Mikael Backlund
(23rd place, if this is an oldskool, it has to be catchy and this tune isn't)
Dat Nigga Randall
Maktone know better than to release this shit tune. I think he's been taking too much drugs lately. I wish him better luck with the 6581 in the future. Poor title. Too much smoke Maktone?!
cmp
Aggressive. Persistent. Catchy. Annoying? ;P
MTR1975
happy uptempo tune, nice arpeggios
WoLaNd (Levente Buttás)
Good rithm; some passages are very beautiful
Ice00/stefano Tognon
hectic, simple arps, childish fairground theme
Turtle
Happy arpegiooooos! I love them! Next time spend more time on sounds,
they are a bit raw an unfiltered and on the same volume level.
Lead melody sounds isn't best tuned out and would be cool if it had some echoes ;-).
Ok enough kibitzing, next one. (CreaMD)
21. 13. Nicca Pop Anders Carlsson (Zapac) / Sweden 326

Comments

Very sarcastic & happy sounding little tune (if that is even possible at the same time).
Cadaver / Lasse Öörni
LOL, the first part remember me the "Turbo Outrun" track!
MattSid
Hmm, not too fond with the unfiltered bass. Might have swapped the filter from chords to bass myself. A catchier lead had made it a happy tune worth remembering. Quite odd uses of slides.
Dane
sounds like some early arcade ingame tune. properly arranged, but does little to actually draw my attention.
trompkins / maciej stankiewicz
Reminds me on some old tunes done by me :))
Stefan Konarkowski
Ironically not actually very poppy. I think there's a message somewhere there, heh
A Life in Hell
Some kind of 80´s C64 scene style.
G-Fellow/Civitas
happy stuff to annoy cats with, which is good once they've been bad. overall it's not my favorite, would have been cool to have the whole thing to play in a lower octave to make it appear less piercing.
dalezy
Hehe, this one I like...
Pingo
not bad, but a bit to simple for my taste.
Spinball
The chordmelody gives me Macmagic-vibes and the melody itself makes me think of Moon, especially that odd glide here and there. Kind of simplistic soundpicture.
Twoflower / Mikael Backlund
(17th place, nutty, witty, funny, bit too short, bit too repetitive, bit too raw sounding ;>)
Dat Nigga Randall
Pure shit. Waste of time. Melody doesnt exist. It is just shit. 1:55 of torture.
cmp
Sounds like a cute tune out of a jump 'n' run game ...
finchy
Catchy, but truely annoyingly so... :) It's like the bastard child of Stock, Aitken and Waterman. ;)
MTR1975
another oldskool-sounding naive piece
WoLaNd (Levente Buttás)
Very good quality
Ice00/stefano Tognon
outdated instruments and arpeggios
Turtle
Simple raw sounds. Reminds me of some Hubbard stuff (I hope master forgives me.. ;-).
+Cute, but naive melody. (CreaMD)
22. 8. Bonuslevel! Tony Cavén (Ferrara / phObos team) / Finland 312

Comments

The sounds are pretty horrible and transmit a quite sour aesthetic, which is intriguing in its own way. (I'm slowly beginning to sound like Spinoza Ray Prozak...) The bassline (when it's playing solo) reminds a bit of Firefly music.
Cadaver / Lasse Öörni
Too much Rob Hubbard's "Crazy Comets" influenced :p
MattSid
Too retro for me. I don't mind going for oldschool melodic tunes, but would prefer it if instruments were a bit polished. But that's just me.
Dane
spirit of the 80's... sounds like a really ancient intro zak. amusing, in an oldschool kind of way.
trompkins / maciej stankiewicz
:)
ferrara
This one gets better as you get further into it, I think I would have been happier if the entire first minute had been culled.
A Life in Hell
Hmm,
G-Fellow/Civitas
feels vintage.
dalezy
What has happened to imagination?
Pingo
very catch song, just the drumsounds aren´t that good.
Spinball
The instruments sound like a VIC-20 on steroids. (maybe 6562/63 chip?)
Zapac/Anders Carlsson
Driving drums. Somewhat gameinspired? Would have worked as a bonuslevel for Double Dragon III or some similarly late action game published in the early 90-ies.
Twoflower / Mikael Backlund
(21st place, some fresh instruments, pumping rhythm and that's basically it; not bad overall)
Dat Nigga Randall
There is some data sounding in the base drum, but it drowns in the Jazz.
cmp
I stayed in the bonus level for a while, and got to the end without faltering.
MTR1975
Matt Gray styled bassline, the other parts don't appeal to me
WoLaNd (Levente Buttás)
Good sid sound (or, the one I like)
Ice00/stefano Tognon
almost no FX, Discobeat without drive, Matt Gray but 18 years too late
Turtle
I like the sound used in melody. It has some flvour of real electronic music of 80's but all in all too noisy stuff. (CreaMD)
23. 1. Lost Again Richard Bayliss (Richard / The New Dimension) / England/UK 306

Comments

This is Bayliss, right? Typical but nice minor arpeggios and solid beat. Melodies don't really stand out and I don't think the tune develops to its full potential.
Cadaver / Lasse Öörni
The best tune in this Compo! isn't impossible don't choose it as winner!
MattSid
Instruments sound like it was made in 1987. Predictable and no real hook unfortunately.
Dane
very aptly named. absolutely no innovative elements here. huelsbeckian basis with an abyssmal, generic melody topping.
trompkins / maciej stankiewicz
The thing is, it is well done, technically, it's just musically so generic sounding, you know, it might be okay as the background music to some demo where you don't want the music to intrude on the effect, but for a purely listening song, it just doens't do anything for me
A Life in Hell
I like it, some kind of trance...
G-Fellow/Civitas
very easy tune, that. euro-radiostuff mixed with, well .. something else. not my type of musick. the composer should have used headphones for final adsr-tweaking. =)
dalezy
The lead is terrible...
Pingo
well done but a bit boring.
Spinball
Not much to comment.
Twoflower / Mikael Backlund
(24th place, simplistic italodisco; Rich, consider using some other harmonical solutions at last, please)
Dat Nigga Randall
Hmm, no, this tune doesnt say anything to me exceot "I tried to copy all the other guys sound and style." Crowd pleaser, but doesnt please me. Feels like it repeats in infinitum.
cmp
GENERAL COMMENT DISCLAIMER: Comments are for fun, and are only my opinion anyway... :) With this tune, you deserve to "lose again" :) Bland, uninspired. Doesn't make my ears bleed from the outside, but my brain is inside stabbing them from boredom.
MTR1975
oldskool synth-pop walking bass, nothing special, introtune
WoLaNd (Levente Buttás)
Very nice. I like the arpeggio and instruments.
Ice00/stefano Tognon
instruments could be more interesting, simple bassline
Turtle
Why vote my own tune? Bit unfair, so 1 point :)
Richard Bayliss
Nice RB stretchiness, but not so catchy as in oldest tunes. (CreaMD)
24. 26. TRYITON1x2&4-first48sec Przemek Mroczkowski (Surgeon/Vulture Design) / Poland 303

Comments

Hmm.. confused mix of different parts, though each is individually great. Beginning is a bit unpleasant. :)
Cadaver / Lasse Öörni
It hurts.
Dane
---
trompkins / maciej stankiewicz
I want to give this one 11 points....
Kenho
A weird one, this one. I don't think it worked in my mind as it should have, which is not to say that it's not good, because it clearly is, but I couldn't connect the dots.
A Life in Hell
good sounds, not so well played
G-Fellow/Civitas
cool haunting intropart, i'm not too fond of the rest though.
dalezy
Don't know what to say about this one. It's just pointless.
Pingo
strange idea with those to slow 48 seconds and the rest of the tune seems to unstructered.
Spinball
Nice intro, but I'm unable to hear how it connects to the rest.
Zapac/Anders Carlsson
Ambient and strange. Nice atonality in the beginning. The mid theme got quite standard chords and isn't as interesting as the third theme, which feels actionpacked. Would have benefitted from leaving out parts and polishing more, if the intention wasn't to overwhelm the listener with these three, way different feelings.
Twoflower / Mikael Backlund
(9th place, on the verge of being unecessarily dissonant sometimes, but FULL of ideas, caught myself humming it while shaving my balls... face)
Dat Nigga Randall
After 1:50 it rox.
cmp
promising part in the middle.
Fanta
The first 30 secs is really good on 4x, but i cant admit to liking it very much after that.
MTR1975
the build-up is good at th beginning (the 1x-2x-4x idea is great!), it's too bad that then the composition fades into mediocrity
WoLaNd (Levente Buttás)
It is good. nice arpeggio
Ice00/stefano Tognon
theme o.k., too much filters, instruments, not fat enough
Turtle
Uff.. that highpitch sounds is killing me. Some passages are interesting,
but it's all too confused and raw sounding. (CreaMD)
25. 9. FarOff CyberSpace (short) Robert Dörfler (LordNikon) / Germany 298

Comments

Very atmospheric. When listening to this you feel like being inside a computer chip, about to be derezzed by malicious security program :) But apart from creating an interesting atmosphere, I'm afraid in the end the song doesn't go much from where it started.
Cadaver / Lasse Öörni
Nice melody, but IHMO too much slower.
MattSid
Never takes off for me.
Dane
could be good if it wasn't for the really unimaginative melody played by that annoing slow-tremolo lead.
trompkins / maciej stankiewicz
Quite impressive minimalism
A Life in Hell
Some kind of experimental music, i like it!
G-Fellow/Civitas
boring. was it supposed to play at faster speed?
dalezy
If the filtered drum-loop had been used more, this one could have been pretty good.
Pingo
Some nice pieces inthere, but also annoying ones. Needs more work. I think it can turn out pretty good!
Cybernator
experimental stuff that leads nowhere in my eys/ears, but some intresting sounds here and there.
Spinball
aint this bugged? sounded like playing toooooo slow (in sidplay)
oswald
Spaceish, ambient, neat.
Twoflower / Mikael Backlund
(22nd place, of all electronic experiments in SC4 I liked this one best)
Dat Nigga Randall
Soooo groovy. Nice data soundz. Ez tune. Not a party tune, but I like it. HEAVY data. Descriptive title.
cmp
Why oh why have I gone into "Points of View" mode? This was very nice, but should have been longer...?
MTR1975
got bored quite fast...
WoLaNd (Levente Buttás)
Interesting sound.
Ice00/stefano Tognon
experimental, matching instruments, theme is good arranged, minimalistic but good, starship at the edge of space floating around steerless
Turtle
LordNikon, you are getting better with every tune! I'm sure your time will come! Compose more, please!
The unintentional deep sine-bass loop (after about 3:00). I would be scared if I had to listen to it during night.
I should rather turn it off now 6:37 on timer. (CreaMD)
26. 18. Depleted Uranium Linus Akerlund (Puterman/Fairlight) / Sweden 291

Comments

Total robot music, sarcastic and mocking the inferior human existence :)
Cadaver / Lasse Öörni
A cool intro. Too bad nothing happens.
Dane
clicky offset hihats and whirring hi-freq solos spoil what could have been a pleasant piece of glitchtronica background loop.
trompkins / maciej stankiewicz
When I talk about songs that are technically awesome, but still bore me, this is the song that I am talking about.
A Life in Hell
hmm
G-Fellow/Civitas
i was hoping for some changes, but alas the theme stayed the same throughout the whole tune.
dalezy
"Hey, lets use this boring sound over and over. That'll make a good tune!" No, sorry, it won't.
Pingo
again one of those more experimental songs which don´t work to well for me.
Spinball
Nice sounds, but it is not quite a sing-a-longy.
Zapac/Anders Carlsson
Mellow 64-techno like this is not very common in these day. Certainly transmitting something to me.
Twoflower / Mikael Backlund
(25th place for me, a couple of interesting sounds, trancy, totally not my cup of urine)
Dat Nigga Randall
This must be Puterman. Nice sounds, a litte "too good" for being Puterman. Minimalistic and nice. I love the triangle wave beeping now and then. Just plan nice. The rnd() functions in the end is lovely. Smooth beat.
cmp
Pretty nice tune. Reminded me a lot of old skool house music. I like the slides at the end a lot :) (One or two SID "bleeds" or "bugs" (on my 8580 anyway) that made me crap myself, but we wont mention them...)
MTR1975
monotonic techie stuff - I'm not in that mood
WoLaNd (Levente Buttás)
loopz..
GRG
Interesting "strange" space like tune
Ice00/stefano Tognon
crazy, contaminated, missing alternation, bury it deep
Turtle
Monotone and minimalistic, yes. Perfect piece for "data" enthusiasts. (CreaMD)
27. 27. Mididrums Jaymz Julian (A Life in Hell) / Australia 286

Comments

Relies heavily on arpeggios, which may at times create very confused harmony. Somewhat depressive but still glorious feeling :) A bit more bass would have been pleasing. Towards the end it really freaks out..
Cadaver / Lasse Öörni
What mididrums? The chord section sounds out of tune.
Dane
---
trompkins / maciej stankiewicz
i love the percs on this one :)
ne7
Well, this one is mine, and honestly, in retrospect, it doens't stand up well, which is unfortunate.
A Life in Hell
not so good...
G-Fellow/Civitas
very easy tune, it sadly turns out strange when the arpeggio attempts to become one with the accompanying melody.
dalezy
La, la, la... I guess t.A.T.u could've done it better.
Pingo
starts ok, but at 0:40 it starts to sound very strange.
Spinball
Simplistic. Not really that developed sounds. I doubt it's intentional.
Twoflower / Mikael Backlund
(26th place, begins promisingly, but those arpeggios at 0:40 - geez...)
Dat Nigga Randall
Doesnt like the tune at all. I dont see the point. It is not weird and it is not good in any way.
cmp
i like the false notes.. :P
Fanta
Jolly old bounce along. Not at all bad.
MTR1975
for 3 minutes? it's booooring... and I don't like the clippety-clap drums
WoLaNd (Levente Buttás)
Nice. Very well done.
Ice00/stefano Tognon
too much arps, average instruments
Turtle
Too complicated arrpegios. (CreaMD)
28. 22. Riffing On The Edge Andrew Lemon (ne7/Creators/Napalm/Rebels) / England/UK 267

Comments

Snaresound is extremely sarcastic. Some quite weird & creative SID noises, but overall feeling is quite confusing. :)
Cadaver / Lasse Öörni
Finally some fun ringmodulation. Too bad there wasn't a verse/chorus I could remember later on.
Dane
the limit of crappy songs i'd write something positive about was exceeded (and how!) by 'into the sunset'. sorry guys, if you came in before it, you might have had better luck. this also applies to other tunes graded 1.
trompkins / maciej stankiewicz
done when i was very drunk :) i've voted 5 coz i dont think i should vote my own tune up heh (trying to be neutral :)
ne7
Nice, interesting sounds.
A Life in Hell
four points
G-Fellow/Civitas
way too hyper for me and after all a very strange harmony.
dalezy
Sounds put together in a mixed manner. It's still better than most other tunes here, though.
Pingo
doesnt´t work for me, to disharmonic.
Spinball
This doesn't sound like standard C-64 music, and that's what I really like with it. Love the usage of ringmodulation and the lack of arpeggios other than melodic ones. I like the atonality aswell, and there' are no doubt that those passages are intentional.
Twoflower / Mikael Backlund
(27th place, minimalistic almost without harmony, uses four instruments overall throughout - didn't like it)
Dat Nigga Randall
Cool data, but doesnt make it. Come on. More tunes from this author would be appreciated. Descriptive titel.
cmp
Nice effects and I quite like the progression, but it the rest just sounds like someone leaning on a keyboard to me...
MTR1975
a ballblazer spoof, nice sounds tho
WoLaNd (Levente Buttás)
Very good. One of the best
Ice00/stefano Tognon
too much ringmod, somehow a little boring
Turtle
Another tune with simple raw sounds. Confused tune.
That modulation after 0:30 makes it a bit more interesting. (CreaMD)
29. 30 COMPOSEED $c0de Rafal Szyja (Raf/Samar/Vulture) / Poland 252

Comments

Daring & adventurous!
Cadaver / Lasse Öörni
Very boring bass makes it difficult for me to listen to.
Dane
---
trompkins / maciej stankiewicz
I mean, it sounds offensive to my ears, but I can't really identify why. Almost like it's horribly detuned.
A Life in Hell
Hmm, üben.
G-Fellow/Civitas
$c0dermusick. lacks a lot of musiciality, sounds and an overall structure.
dalezy
Sounds like a bad Euro-techno-hit that's gone broken and is played too slow.
Pingo
No idea why, but for a moment it reminded me of Joe Blade 2 (the ingame music). 8-|
Cybernator
sounds like a 80´s pop song, the part at 2:00-2:30 feels somewhat unfitting.
Spinball
Sounds too muddy for my taste.
Sascha Zeidler
Ring mod and sync - Bob Yannes' gift to SID listening humanity.
Zapac/Anders Carlsson
Another tune which is kind of special. I like the uptempo part of it at 2:00 and the distorted lead-sound.
Twoflower / Mikael Backlund
(28th place, some nice ideas drowned in the sea of dissonance)
Dat Nigga Randall
Coooool. Really really nice. If Akira was participating I would guess this was his tune. But I think he is not. Nice drop at 1:00. The tune (the SECOND TUNE) at approx 2 min is the better of the THREE tunes I can hear in this one.
cmp
Love the rythym. Tangible melody is missing tho... :/
MTR1975
learn, learn, learn some music!
WoLaNd (Levente Buttás)
Done very well
Ice00/stefano Tognon
simple, too much ringmod, idea of volume-change is o.k. but not well done
Turtle
Author said it very well himself... (CreaMD)
30. 28. ChipSlip Marcus Jansson (CMP) / Sweden 229

Scary tune...
Cadaver / Lasse Öörni
Very odd.

trompkins / maciej stankiewicz

iAN CooG
I think, this song is just not for me, because people have raved about it, and I just don't see it. Sure, again, nice sounds, but it's all about the music, is it not?
A Life in Hell
Scary one...uhh
G-Fellow/Civitas
makes me want to flood a factory with strawberry-pudding. the random melody along that industrial-esque beat makes me wonder if all of that was intended as it is. it's getting worse in the end.
dalezy
This one at least had some interesting sounds. Too bad it doesn't have an interesting melody too.
Pingo
not my cup of tea
Spinball
I knew it, there's a hidden 303 in the Brotkasten. Sadly, the tune doesn't work out quite well.
Sascha Zeidler
Very special tune. Nice sounds and sort of nice tune aswell, just not my preferred style.
Twoflower / Mikael Backlund
(29th place, those multispeed congas are the only thing I like here)
Dat Nigga Randall
Voting on my own tune here!!! Doesnt feel alright, though. I never do that at parties. But as the tune is fairly good with wikked sounds, I give it a six. I could have worked more on the sounds and not repeat the same pattern as often. But the tune was done in a rush. And it took approx. 1 hour to do it. Longer tune, with more variation will come in the future. This tune is not my usual dark chaotic style that I acctually like better. Maybe I just wanted to get votes?! That sucks, man! Give me more DATA! I'm not a musician. I'm a coder. The tune is too slow, doesnt have a good beat, doesnt tie together. Descriptive title. I like the SID click.
cmp
surely amongst my favourite tunes i don´t like. ;)
Fanta
Pretty experimental sounding. I quite like its scatterbrain feel... :)
MTR1975
doesn't get together as one piece
WoLaNd (Levente Buttás)
Listen many times. Some sound are very good, other are too much distortion
Ice00/stefano Tognon
wheres the plot?
Turtle
Interesting sounds but not much music. (CreaMD)
31. 5. Into The Sunset Oliver VieBrooks (Six of Dloc) / USA 194

Comments

This goes a bit over my head... It must be a very clever joke but I don't get it really. Aurally not very pleasant.
Cadaver / Lasse Öörni
Sorry, the intro turns me off.
Dane
i love this out of the blue snare-ish-kick-sort-of-tom-like drum. plim plum plim WHACK. the melody is charming in its simplicity, the whole thing feels like it was composed by mermaid when she was 3 years old. ok, basically what i'm trying to say is: this song sucks ass. and i like it nevertheless. it carves a wide smile on my face with its crude, blunt motiffs and clumsy solo-wannabes. it doesn't happen often, me liking a crappy song so i give it a 9. as you can imagine.
trompkins / maciej stankiewicz
for the title :)
PCH / Unreal
I know that using $21 and $11 waves are in style right now, and I appriciate that, and this rating isn't based on technical merit, but rather the fact that it's almost compelty musically devioid. But yet, not quite, since I can picture it in some places.
A Life in Hell
Not my taste....
G-Fellow/Civitas
i've been brave and listened to the end, causing me to be all numb and stolid during the rest of the day. but hey, one can perfectly beatbox to this.
dalezy
Yeah, right... I think this one is broken. Or the author is.
Pingo
sorry, but this is realy bad...
Spinball
Style of the tune perhaps better suitable for a themed demo, not for a Sidcompo?
Twoflower / Mikael Backlund
(30th place for me, I'm completely not into such minimal experiments)
Dat Nigga Randall
A copy of Puterman, if not Puterman, but I dont think so, as the tune is too short! Not very nice. Not very minimalistic.
cmp
I wished this tune had walked off into the sunset... :P Really not for me this one...
MTR1975
very oldskool sounding, cca. 1983 :D
WoLaNd (Levente Buttás)
This is not so bad. I like the melody and the simple instruments used. Listen for long time.
Ice00/stefano Tognon
it's just a joke, isn't it? No FX, xylophonic
Turtle

Sounds like Cliff Hanger (game) sounds. Six, you still need to compose more. (CreaMD)

32. 23. Distoken Disinterpretor Langel Janson L. Bookbinder Esq. IX / USA 188

Comments

And just when I started talking about sarcastic sounds, obviously I had not heard anything yet. Though I guess this crosses my line of too sarcastic, but I try to appreciate it... Has a sort of spy / danger feeling.
Cadaver / Lasse Öörni
Oldschool game music anyone? Not my cup of tea.
Dane
i kinda like the beginning. some fills and interludes are interesting, too. the rest was probably generated by feeding random notes into sequencer. which was broken.
trompkins / maciej stankiewicz
Not _entirely_ without merit.....I mean, there is honestly something in there
A Life in Hell
Ohh, my god.
G-Fellow/Civitas
can i have that randomizer plugin for goattracker please?
dalezy
This is just plain bad. Can I give 0 points?
Pingo
sounds like something went wrong here...
Spinball
Very blippy. This reminds me of some music composed with Factor 5's violently sucking tools on the GBC. Only that here, the vibe is intentional and got Paul Norman influences. Some people don't like this, but I do.
Twoflower / Mikael Backlund
(31st place, toothache)
Dat Nigga Randall
YES! Data rock. The way I like it. My guess is that this musik is Norwegian! ROCK ON! MORE MORE! The titel says it all.
cmp
nothing against "experimental" stuff. but this kind of music i just don´t like.
Fanta
Not my cup of tea at all...
MTR1975
experimental electronica with uninspired sound design
WoLaNd (Levente Buttás)
hehe really ?
GRG
Very strange tune, with a large variety of sound
Ice00/stefano Tognon
data song, experimental but done worse than "FarOff...", too simple instruments
Turtle
Great name for song, but the tune is heavily messing with my heartbeat. (CreaMD)
